Estimate at a glance

Assumptions: age 1, U.S.-average prices (no ZIP), $2,000 emergency savings.

  • Expected vet costs this year: $1,442
  • A bad year (1 in 10): $3,597
  • Expected lifetime vet costs: $20,244
  • Chance of at least one year with vet bills above your $2,000 (over your dog's lifetime): 98%

In this model, the lowest-cost plan structure that keeps the chance of a year with out-of-pocket costs above your savings under 5% is: $500 deductible · 90% reimbursement · unlimited annual limit. Its modeled monthly premium (benchmark, not a quote) is about $120/month. If quotes you get are much higher, compare other plans.

Conditions that drive costs for this breed

  • Pug Dog Encephalitis (PDE): CRITICAL. A devastating, breed-specific brain inflammation. It is fatal, incurable, and hits young dogs. There is a DNA test for susceptibility. Do not buy a puppy without knowing the risk level.
  • Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS): Their nostrils are pinched, and their soft palate is too long. They are essentially breathing through a straw. Many Pugs need surgery just to breathe comfortably.
  • Eye Issues (Proptosis/Ulcers): Their eyes bulge out. They are prone to scratches (ulcers) and dry eye. In extreme trauma, the eye can pop out of the socket. It is a horror show.
  • Hemivertebrae: A deformity of the spine (screw tail) that can cause paralysis. The cute curly tail is actually a spinal defect that can go wrong.
